Maui, HI

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

Days before the devastating fire, I had the pleasure of visiting Maui. I'm sure some things have changed since I was there, but here is some insight from my experience while I was there:

  • HOWZIT HOSTEL- I stayed in a hostel since I was only there for 3 days, most of which were spent exploring from Dawn until Dusk. This definitely isn't for everyone! There was parking, they provided a pancake breakfast daily, sheets were clean and there were multiple bathrooms...It was similar to a college dorm.

  • Looking for a nicer stay, different location, or resort style stay? Check out tons of other great options here!

Excursions:

  • Snorkeling-As most snorkel tours do, we went to a reef for a little snorkeling and had a delicious light-lunch. Then we headed for a second snorkel spot where there were about a DOZEN sea turtles! They were relaxing in the area and you could swim a respectable distance right next to them...(never get too close or touch them!)

As if that was not incredible in itself, we then went to find dolphins and were wildly successful!

Our captain detoured for a bit so we could ride right by the dolphins for nearly 10 minutes,

there were SO MANY surfing right near the bow of our boat.

It was a great tour and small as well, we weren't stuck snorkeling in large groups...which I

prefer.

  • Road to Hana-We also spent a day driving the road to Hana. I did this nearly a decade ago in a jeep and it was a blast! Stopping to get in waterfalls and secret hikes was incredible. However, visiting again in 2023 was a nightmare...I would NOT recommend driving yourself! You are no longer allowed to stop, there are designated parking spots at SOME of the locations, but they are limited and cost money. Many of the places are also off-limits now, you can't hike or go in most of the water falls sadly...very disappointing.

Transportation:

We rented a car since we wanted to see the whole island.

Things to do:

Beach- My favorite beach we went to was Big Beach at Makena State Park!

Restaurants-Maui Brewing Company has an adorable outdoor patio lit up at night and great food! We also liked the live music in Lahaina at Fleetwoods for dinner and Down the Hatch for a great lunch spot and drinks after our excursion.
