Washington D.C.

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

In typical ‘Breezy’ fashion, I was checking for the cheapest flight from DFW- any time, any destination. Washington D.C. wasn’t the absolute cheapest, but it was in the top 3 and I have always wanted to go…so you can guess what happened. No surprise here, we went to D.C. three weeks later =] Of course, it was freezing! Most likely what warranted the cheap tickets-but no worries for this Oregon girl! We packed up our hats, gloves, down jackets, thermals, and headed for the cold! This was a weekend trip and it was definitely enough time for me to see everything I wanted, but for Museum lovers…you might want to add a few more days. In our short time we were able to see so much and fortunately walk to most places! We Stayed at the Wink Hotel, a very nice hotel about a mile from the White House for only $61 a night! Each day we tried a new restaurant so to save some time, I will just list them Pete’s cafe- Wouldn’t recommend it for the coffee or muffins District Commons- Looked like a great place-adult milkshakes, craft beer and burgers but the burgers were NOT good, dry, and super spendy. Nandos- Chicken, chicken, and more chicken! This place is popular to Europeans and has almost any kind of chicken, whatever sauce you’d like, and bottomless Froyo! It was great and a healthy option! Mad Hatter- Sports bar where we watched the Super Bowl, they had great drinks and their bacon mac and cheese was delish! Pot Belly- We have eaten here before in Texas, but we couldn’t find anywhere that looked good for lunch so we wound up here…yummy as ever and nice warm soup for the freezing weather! Soi 38- Great Thai food! In addition to eating, we actually saw sights as well. We got a tour of the White House, which anyone can do as long as you request it from your congressman no later than 21 days in advance. We also got a tour of the Capitol building and got a ticket to the gallery where you can watch votes actually take place! We visited the Library of Congress, National Archives, Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and the Museum of American History. There are bikes for rent all over the place, so if you are not big on walking…don’t worry! We also walked to the Lincoln Memorial and were lucky enough to be there on a nice day where we could see the Washington National Monument in the Reflecting Pool. The next day we got really ambitious and walked ALLLLL the way to the Arlington National Cemetery. This experience was incredibly humbling; there is so much to see and appreciate here. We saw the beautiful marble amphitheater, the tomb of the unknown soldier and the changing of the guard ceremony. We visited John F. Kennedy’s grave, and the home of Robert E. Lee. Although this was a long journey on foot, in the pouring rain in winter temperatures, visiting this site was one of the most memorable experiences from the entire trip and I wold recommend it to all!
